goalsFocus on the Destination

  • Don’t make it complicated.
  • All you need is the deadline and the destination.
  • For now, just focus on where you’re going (the goal).  How you’ll get there (the action steps) come later.

Start with One Goal

  • Trying to work on 3 or 4 things at once takes a lot of time and energy.
  • It’s better to start with your expectations a little lower and increase them than to place the bar too high and set yourself up for failure.
  • Establish the pattern of meeting every goal you set.  (Success will result in more success!)

Major in Motivation

  • The best goal to set is the one you are most motivated to work on.
  • The area with the largest gap between your aspirations and reality is usually where you will find your greatest motivation to change.

Be Concise

  • The best goal statements are concise and to the point–preferably a single sentence.

Visualize your future!

A goal represents a new or better future you’re trying to achieve.

  1. What will your life be like when you achieve this goal?
  2. What will be different?
  3. Describe the change when you’ve reached this goal—how you look, feel, think, act, etc.
  4. What will your average day look like once you reach your goal?

If you remember from a previous post, it’s important to set SMART goals.

  •  S–specific     (You know exactly what you’re aiming for.)
  • M–measurable   (You will know when you’ve reached it.)
  • A–attainable   (The outcome is possible and is not dependent on the actions of anyone else.)
  • R–relevant   (It is important to you and you care enough about it to work hard to achieve it)
  • T–time-specific   (You have a deadline.  If there is NO DEADLINE, there is NO GOAL)

Sometimes You Will Change Horses Midstream

  • It’s very common to change your original growth goal to something completely different.
  • Because of your work on the original goal, God may initiate a set of circumstances that grabs your attention and leads you to respond to that initiative instead of your original goal.
  • Don’t be discouraged.  God may be doing bigger and better things in your life than you had originally envisioned!

What goal will you set today?
